How to remove the Backing Plate from the brake on Chrysler Sebring?

To remove the brake backing plate, first, use a brake pedal holding tool to depress the brake pedal past one inch (25 mm) of travel and hold it to isolate the master cylinder from the brake hydraulic system, preventing brake fluid from draining. Next, raise and support the vehicle, then remove the three wheel mounting nuts and the tire and wheel assembly. Access and remove the six drum brake shoes from the support plate. Position a 10 mm box wrench over the retainer fingers on the end of the parking brake cable housing, compress the retaining fingers, and pull the cable housing out of the support plate. Disconnect the brake tube at the wheel cylinder and remove the wheel cylinder attaching screws. Take out the wheel cylinder from the support plate. If a wheel speed sensor is present, remove the screw fastening the sensor head in the rear of the hub and bearing and take out the sensor head. Finally, remove the four bolts securing the hub and bearing, support plate, and spacer to the knuckle, then take out the hub and bearing, support plate, and spacer as an assembly from the knuckle, separating the spacer and hub and bearing from the support plate once removed.

How to install the Backing Plate on Chrysler Sebring?

In order to install the backing plate, the hub and bearing 3 are first assembled through support plate 2 and spacer 1 is installed at rear of assembly. Install the hub, bearing, support plate, and spacer as an assembly on the knuckle. If you are going to reuse original mounting bolt threads, be sure to clean and apply Mopar(R) Stud & Bearing Mount Adhesive or equivalent. Fasten the hub and bearing, support plate, and spacer to the knuckle using four bolts and tighten to 105 Nm (77 ft. lbs.). Position a parking brake cable into its mounting hole in the brake support plate, pushing the cable housing in until the retainer's fingers engage. In the event that a wheel speed sensor is fitted, the wheel speed sensor head should be installed into the rear of the hub and bearing. Mounting screw to be tightened 10 Nm (89 in. lbs.). Mount the wheel cylinder on the brake support plate and torque mounting screws to 13 Nm (115 in. lbs.). Attach the brake hose to the wheel cylinder and tighten the hose nut to 17 Nm (150 in. lbs). Lubricate the contact surfaces of the shoes on the support plate and anchor, with Mopar(R) Brake Lubricant or equivalent. Inspect brake shoes. Put in place the drum brake shoes and drum adjusting them as necessary. The tire and wheel assembly must be installed and wheel mounting nuts tightened to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Gently rotate the rear wheel to check that the brake drum drags lightly on the shoes, then lower the vehicle and remove the brake pedal restraining tool. As needed, bleed the wheel cylinder that is causing difficulties, and take a road test after repair.
