Chrysler Sebring Brake Shoe Set Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to install a Brake Shoe Set on Chrysler Sebring?
    A:
Prior to brake shoe installation, lubricate the shoe contact areas on the support plate and the anchor, as well as the adjuster screw threads, with Mopar(R) Brake Lubricant or equivalent. Turn the adjuster wheel in until it's bottomed out. Lay one front shoe and one rear shoe inboard-side-up on a flat surface, with the rear shoe including the parking brake lever. The adjuster should be installed between the brake shoes, with the adjuster wheel towards the rear. The adjuster wide notch in the rear fork must engage with parking brake lever. After that, Install the upper return spring, flip the shoe assembly to show the outboard side, and install the lever pawl onto the pivot on the rear shoe. The adjuster spring is positioned between front shoe and lever pawl followed by the installation of pre-assembled brake shoe assembly through the opening between wheel cylinder and support plate hub and bearing. Place the upper ends of the brake shoes into the grooves of the wheel cylinder pistons, against the anchor pin. Position the bottom of the front shoe against the anchor pin and install a shoe hold down pin from the rear through the support plate and front shoe. To restrain the front shoe to the support plate, compress and fit the hold-down spring 2, then compress the spring for the parking brake cable return and fit the cable on to the parking brake lever, releasing the spring below the retaining tab on the lever. The rear shoe at the bottom is positioned against the anchor pin. A shoe hold-down pin is installed from the rear through the support plate and the rear shoe. The hold-down spring is compressed and installed to hold the rear shoe to the support plate. Fix the lower shoe spring and adjust the brake shoes to drum diameter with a brake shoe gauge. Install the brake drum. Place the tire and wheel assembly into position and tighten the wheel mounting nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs). Turn both rear wheels gradually to check that the brake drums lightly drag on the shoes and adjust again if necessary. When you are done, lower the vehicle and have it take a road test stopping in forward and reverse where the automatic-adjuster will continue to adjust the brakes.
  • Q:
How to remove and replace the Brake Shoe Set on Chrysler Sebring?
    A:
Ensure parking brake is at "released" position before raising and supporting vehicle to remove and replace brake shoes. To complete the removal of the shoe set, perform the removal on each side of the vehicle. It can be advantageous to install the new components on the first side prior to removing the opposite. This will allow reference to the correct assembly of the unit. First of all, take wheel mounting nuts off then rear tire and wheel assembly. After that, remove the brake drum. Take off the lower shoe spring. Compress and remove the hold-down spring that retains the rear shoe to the support plate. Pull the rear shoe away from the anchor and then disconnect the parking brake cable from the lever. Remove parking brake cable from lever after compressing cable return spring. Compress and remove the hold-down spring retaining the front shoe to the support plate, and then remove both brake shoes from the wheel cylinder. The shoe assembly is to be removed by bringing the wheel cylinder and support plate hub and bearing through the opening between them on the outboard-side-up onto a flat surface. Take out the adjuster spring from leading brake shoe and the lever pawl from the pivot on rear brake shoe. Turn the shoe assembly upside down to facilitate work on the inboard side. Then, take out the upper shoe return spring and remove the adjuster from the shoes and parking brake lever.
