The Dodge Avenger Starter turns the battery's electricity into mechanical energy that cranks the engine to start the combustion process. A Dodge Avenger Starter assembly is located next to the engine flywheel to activate each time the key is turned. An external solenoid mounted to the battery by heavy-gauge wire energizes the unit. It sends current to the field coils or permanent magnets surrounding the rotating armature in the compact case. When the ignition switch activates the Starter control circuit, a relay along with a safety switch ensures that engagement does not take place unless the automatic transmission is in neutral or the clutch pedal is depressed in manual models. The Starter drive gear moves forward to mesh with the flywheel or flexplate ring gear as the armature turns. The torque from the Starter then spins the crankshaft. Once the engine fires, drive is prevented from being delivered from the engine to the wheels. Some factory installations use a gear reduction layout where there is a reduction gear between the armature and the drive. Thus, torque increases and a smaller and lighter assembly can be made. The Dodge Avenger system is reliable and simple thanks to the use of a similar electrically driven, solenoid-controlled Starter design on every Dodge Avenger.

Dodge Avenger Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to Install a Starter Motor for 2.0 and 2.4L Engines on Dodge Avenger?
    A:
First, attach the wiring of the starter and make sure the Battery Cable nut is attached with a tension of 10 Nm (90 in. lbs.). After that, install the starter motor in the lower part of the engine compartment using just hand pressure. The following step is to install the Throttle Body and its bracket. Fasten the starter motor using mounting bolts and set the tightness to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.), before connecting the throttle body electrical connector. After that, place the air cleaner box and inlet tube and join the battery negative cable.
  • Q:
How to Service and Repair a Starter Motor for 2.0 and 2.4L Engines on Dodge Avenger?
    A:
Before servicing and repairing the starter motor on a 2.0 or 2.4L engine, take off the air cleaner box and the air tube. After that, disconnect and separate the battery negative cable. Unscrew the bolt holding the starter motor and take off the connector at the throttle. With the bolts out, get rid of the Throttle Body. Put the starter under the Intake Manifold, tilt its nose toward the cooling module and then raise it up and out. Lastly, take out the starter motor wiring and remove the starter motor from the place it was mounted.
