Dodge Caliber Tie Rod End Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Does the Tie Rod End Affect Steering Gear Installation on Dodge Caliber?
    A:
Use a travel restrictor with the exact thickness and color of the one you are replacing, so that the steering gear will be set correctly. Slot the travel restrictor onto the inner tie rod ball joint at the inboard end so the flat portion of the teeth is outward. Use either Mopar Lock & Seal Adhesive or a similar medium thread locker adhesive to coat the inboard threads of the inner tie rod. Fit the hex into the special tool or crows foot wrench to help you tighten the inner tie rod onto the gear to 78 Nm (58 ft. lbs.). Carry the new bellows over to the tubing where it ends before putting the clamp from the kit loosely around the bellows' larger opening and fastening it just on top of the tie rod end going into the gear inside. Pass the small end of the bellows into the groove you cut into the inner tie rod. Spray a dab of Mopar Lubriplate (or a similar product) into the inner tie rod shaft's groove so you can easily control toe adjustment without twisting the bellows. Pull the short end out so the ridge inside the bellows fits the groove and then add a new clamp over that end. Attach the bellows to the gear body by crimping the large clamp using crimping pliers. Set the inner tie rod nut on the tie rod where you can add the outer tie rod and continue the installation of the outer tie rod next.
