Align the small hole on the back of the compressor clutch coil with the dowel pin in the front of the compressor and then place the whole coil onto the compressor so that its wire lead is not caught between the parts. The clutch field coil goes into the compressor with the new snap ring attached, so its bevel points outward and the eyelets face in the direction of the dowel pin location. With Snap Ring Pliers 9764 or its equivalent, insert the snap ring and hold it fully into place in the groove. Make sure that the pulley and bearing don't touch the friction surfaces when you put them in place to keep the clutch from failing quickly. In some cases, you may lightly tap the pulley with a block of wood. The snap ring has to be used to keep the pulley and bearing assembly together, with the bevel side pointing outside. If you decide to use the old clutch plate and pulley and bearing assembly, use the original shim; if replacing these components, add a group of 2.54 mm (0.010 in.) shims to the compressor shaft under the clutch plate. Secure the shaft bolt with 19 Nm (168 in.lbs.); check the air gap at several places to confirm it falls within the 0.35 - 0.60 mm range (0.014 - 0.024 in.). Make changes to the shims until you get the right air gap. Bring the wire for the compressor clutch field coil lead behind the connector bracket and then put the connector onto the bracket. Tighten the four bracket or cylinder bolt securing the A/C compressor to 28 Nm (21 ft.lbs.) after loosely tightening them on any model with a 2.4L, 2.5L or 2.8L engine. For models with 3.3L or 3.8L engines, put the bolts and nuts into place loosely and then tighten them by hand to achieve 54 Nm (40 ft.lbs.). Pull apart the compression side retainer by hand on the engine wire harness compressor clutch coil, take out the bracket attached to the top of the A/C compressor and join the engine wire harness to the compressor clutch field coil connector.
