Dodge Caravan Evaporator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace an Evaporator Core in the Front on Dodge Caravan?
    A:
Remove the HVAC unit casing from your vehicle and unfasten both Heater Core tubes from the heater core before installing a front evaporator. Discard the foam seal between the HVAC housing seal flange and the fresh air inlet on the car side, as well as around the expansion valve or evaporator tube side of the dash panel. Following this, remove the expansion valve from the evaporator inlet and outlet tube connectors, unhook the blower wire harness from the connector and pull the wire harness from the clips that secure it to the HVAC housing. Take out the three screws on the top part of the distribution housing and pull it away to detach the hooks from the evaporator housing. Take out the screws joining the upper intake air housing to the lower intake air housing and to the evaporator housing, placing one screw inside the fresh air opening. Take the intake air housing off so you can see and remove the screws connecting the upper and lower sides of the recirculation air door to take them apart. Carefully remove the twelve screws on the perimeter of the evaporator housing and disconnect the upper and lower parts, being sure not to lose the rubber grommet for the HVAC wire harness evaporator temperature sensor. Pull the evaporator and its foam cover together as if they were one, keeping the clam shell type seal in place. If the evaporator is being replaced, put in 60 milliliters of refrigerant oil when installing the system by yourself. Cut the foam wrap so its lowest side is covered by the rubber seal in the housing. Put the top portion of the evaporator housing onto the bottom part, fit the rubber grommet and wire harness into the notch area and tighten twelve screws to 2 Nm. Arrange the recirculation air door with the upper intake air housing, aligning them and fastening them together with screws that are tightened to 2 Nm. Connect the bundle housing hooks and then secure the unit with three 2 Nm screws. Connect the harness back to the Blower Motor, set the expansion valve in place and install a fresh seal around the seal flange of the HVAC housing. After that, install the heater core tubes and the HVAC housing into the car and perform the HVAC Control Actuator Calibration procedure.
  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix the Rear Evaporator Core on Dodge Caravan?
    A:
Remove the rear HVAC housing from the vehicle, remove the rear evaporator line extension from the rear A/C Expansion Valve and then remove the rear A/C expansion valve from the rear A/C evaporator to service and repair the rear evaporator core. Then, carefully take out the rubber grommet placing the evaporator inlet and outlet tubes into the rear HVAC housing near the rear A/C expansion valve. Head to the rear HVAC and take out the three screws and the three metal spring clips connecting the upper part of the housing to the lower part. After that, carefully take out and separate the upper housing casing. Unplug everything from the A/C evaporator before lifting it up out of the HVAC housing at the rear. Add 50 ml (1.7 fl oz) of the needed refrigerant oil when inserting a new rear A/C evaporator. First, bring the rear A/C evaporator down into the lower portion of the rear HVAC housing, then place the upper part over it and add the three spring clips and three screws, exercising 2 N.m (17 in. lbs.) of force on the screws. After you remove both, reinstall the rubber grommet, then fit the rear A/C expansion valve onto the rear A/C evaporator and join the rear evaporator extension line to it, before fitting the rear HVAC housing.
