Dodge Caravan use brake master cylinder in braking system, which relays the amount of pressure exerted by driver's foot into hydraulically generated force that actuates the brakes. It contains pistons that is housed in a body made of cast iron or aluminum and may embody or have an attached fluid chamber. Upon the actuation of the brake pedal a push rod moves the pistons which in turn compress the brake fluid to work on the calipers or drum brake to develop the required friction to halt the car. Dodge Caravan models put into practice Brake Master Cylinders with an option of having dual circuit, this means if the first circuit stops working, you will still be able to have the braking power. Thus, this design is safer than the traditional design because the helicopter can still fly in case of hydraulic failure. The BMS (Brake Master Cylinder) and the design of the over-tube, or the reservoir, have changed throughout the years, however, the goal of the BMS - to supply brake pressure to the brakes themselves - has not wavered and remains the same on every Dodge Caravan vehicle for a good and solid brake performance.

Dodge Caravan Brake Master Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Brake Master Cylinder on Dodge Caravan?
    A:
Before starting any work, wipe the brake master cylinder inside and the reservoir clean with a brake cleaning product like Mopar Brake Parts Cleaner. Take the lid off the brake fluid reservoir and use a syringe to get rid of as much brake fluid as possible inside. Don't remove the reservoir from the brake master cylinder as this can damage it. Remove the brake master cylinder from the power brake vacuum booster next and put it in a vise using the mounting flange. Push out the two pins between the reservoir and the brake master cylinder with a suitable pin punch and shake the reservoir gently from side to side as you pull it from the seal grommets. Take off the two seal grommets that are in the brake master cylinder housing. Install new rubber seals in the brake master cylinder housing and coat the brake fluid reservoir with some fresh brake fluid when you are assembling. Set the reservoir over the sealing grommets and press it down and rock it to make sure it fits well and the bottom of the reservoir is touching the top of everyone of the grommets. After that, insert and bolt on the two F pins and connect the brake master cylinder to the booster. After all that, make sure to fill the fluid reservoir up to the setup's proper level.
  • Q: How to Bleed a Brake Master Cylinder on Dodge Caravan?
    A:
Put the brake master cylinder into a vise so the mounting clamp is holding it, while making sure the piston rod, reservoir, seal and cylinder body are not touched. Make sure to use the right bleeder tubes, because the ABS feature affects where you bleed the brake system. For brake master cylinders that do not have ABS, put a Bleeder Tube, Special Tool 8358-1, into every outlet, tighten them to 17 Nm (145 in. lbs.) and bend the tubes while putting the free ends into the reservoir as far as they will go. After installing one Adapter (Special Tool 8822-2) at each outlet port, tighten it to 17 Nm (145 in. lbs.). Then position and also tighten a Bleeder Tube (Special Tool 8358-1) into each Adapter to 17 Nm (145 in. lbs.). Both ends of the Bleeder Tube should be placed into the reservoir. Refill the brake fluid reservoir with Mopar(R) brake fluid that meets DOT 3, so the fluid is higher than the bleeder tube level. Insert a wooden dowel through the pushrod hole and gently press the brake master cylinder pistons all the way in, then release, until all air bubbles go away and the fluid level does not drop. After your balloon loses air, remove the bleeder tubes, cover the outlet ports and screw on the cap for the reservoir. Last, lift the brake master cylinder from the vise and fit it on the vehicle.
