A Dodge Dakota Starter is responsible for turning battery electricity into mechanical energy. The functioning of the Starter in a sealed housing presents you with an armature sealed within the field coils or permanent magnets when the solenoid draws heavy-gauge current from the battery. Triggered via relay by the ignition switch and neutral or clutch safety switch, the solenoid powers the motor and pushes the drive gear into the flywheel or flexplate ring gear simultaneously. The drive to turn the crankshaft through a direct link or gear-reduction link is produced by the rotation of the armature starting drive. When the engine starts running, the overrunning clutch immediately disconnects the drive, which protects the components from back-spin. The automatic and manual versions of this Starter design share the same design element except for their safety switch arrangement. The reliable electric Starter is present in all the Dodge trucks of the Dakota series, which allows every Dodge truck driver to bring a Dakota engine to life in a jiffy. Thus, the Starter is an important part of all Dodge Dakotas.

Dodge Dakota Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to Install a Starter Motor for a 3.7L or 4.7L Engine with Manual or Automatic Transmission on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
When managed transmission is used, join the solenoid wire to the starter to make sure it snaps firmly. Fasten the Battery Cable to the solenoid stud and then use the nut to tighten the eyelet. Fasten the starter motor to the transmission, but don't let the starter motor hang from the wire harness and install and tighten the lockwasher nut and bolt. Move the car down and secure the negative side of the cable close to the battery. If your car has an automatic transmission and a solenoid-controlled starter motor, connect the solenoid wire to the starter motor, place the battery cable at the solenoid's stud, make sure the battery cable's eyelet nut is installed and tightened and ensure that the starter does not fall from its wire harness. Put the starter motor onto the transmission, put the cooler tube bracket in place if you have one and screw in and tighten the two bolts. Take down the lifted vehicle and put the negative battery cable on first.
  • Q:
How to Remove a Starter Motor from a 3.7L or 4.7L Engine on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
For a 3.7L or 4.7L engine with a manual transmission, start by isolating the negative Battery Cable, next lift and hold the car up. If you have 4WD and specific transmissions, remove the two support bracket bolts at the transmission and lightly pry the bracket aside to reach the lower starter bolt. After checking the belt tension, remove both a bolt and a nut from the transmission, if you have a manual version. Move the starter motor forward until the nose of its casing clears the other housing area and be sure to support the starter so it doesn't hang from the wire harness. Move the nose close to the ground and have the starter motor at a level that allows you to remove the nut joining the battery positive cable wire harness connector eyelet with the solenoid battery terminal stud. First, remove the positive cable wire from the solenoid terminal and since connected. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then raise the vehicle as you would for any other engine. With an automatic transmission, release the bolts as detailed and then lift, angle and disconnect the starter motor just as you would for a manual transmission.
