The Neutral Safety Switch for Dodge Durango is an electrical part that is integrated with the transmission range system. The module inside the vehicle can only start the engine when it verifies that the shift lever is in Park or Neutral. The Neutral Safety Switch sends a lever-position signal to the powertrain or transmission control module. Since the Neutral Safety Switch shows whether Park or Neutral is selected, the computer interrupts the starter relay when any drive gear is chosen. This prevents the engine from cranking and reduces the chance of unintended movement. When the manual lever is moved, contacts inside the switch open or close, thereby creating or blocking a low-voltage path and not through hydraulic force. The same output enables the module to identify each gear so that it can command the appropriate solenoids for shift timing and torque-converter clutch control. In the Dodge Durango model, the Neutral Safety Switch is part of a larger group of sensors that includes throttle, speed, temperature, and other feedback so that the automatic functions smoothly. The Dodge branded Durango equipped with an automatic gearbox employs this Neutral Safety Switch for start-in-gear protection. No alternate type is noted for any Dodge branded Durango.

Dodge Durango Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Neutral Safety Switch on Dodge Durango?
    A:
Raise your vehicle and place a drain pan under the switch before continuing. Cut the wires from the switch and take it out of the switch box. Following this, set the stop lever to Park and Neutral and center the fingers of the switch operating lever in the opening in the shift lever case. After changing the seal, set the switch into the case and tighten it by hand to a torque of 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.) Measure continuity in the switch using a 12V test lamp, put the wires back in place and lower the car. Once you're done, replace the transmission fluid inside the container.
  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Neutral Safety Switch on Dodge Durango?
    A:
The Transmission Position Switch/Sensor needs servicing and repair, so join the vehicle on jack stands and have a drain pan below its Transmission Range Sensor (TRS). Position the transmission lever into manual LOW, where it sits in front of the other notches. Pull the connector for the wiring away from the TRS and use a screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the TRS onto the bracket. Pull the TRS completely away from the bracket and then use Adapter 8581 to release the TRS bracket from the transmission case. Take away the TRS mounting bracket from the transmission case. Also for installation, put the manual shaft lever into LOW on the transmission and fix the TRS mounting bracket into the transmission case, tightened with Adapter 8581 to 34 Nm (300 inch lbs.). Make sure the wiring connector on the TRS faces the front of the transmission, then tighten the two screws to 3.4 Nm (30 inch lbs.). Check that your sensors are working properly, set the manual lever on the transmission to PARK, connect the TRS wiring connector, lower the car and add the right amount of transmission fluid.
