An important part of servicing the steering column is making sure first that the
Air Bag system is disabled. Place the wheels forward and detach the cable marked with a negative symbol from the battery. Pull the air bag out after engaging the bolts securely into the edge of the
Steering Wheel and not into the
Clock Spring to prevent damage. Remove the steering wheel by either using special tool CJ98-1 or an appropriate steering wheel puller. After that, get rid of the steering column opening cover and reinforcement, the tilt lever and the upper and lower column shrouds. Takedown the clock spring and unhook the wiring harness to the column. Separate the
Shift Cable from the lever at the gearbox end, disconnect it from the bracket up top and take out the SKIM module to free the electrical connector. Remove the upper steering shaft coupler bolt, move the shaft to the bottom and discard the
Brake Light Switch. In the end, unbolt the four mounting nuts, lower the steering column off the studs and take the whole assembly from the car.
