The Harmonic Balancer in Dodge Nitro vehicles help engine balancing and reduce combustion process caused vibrations. Known as a vibration damper, this part includes a steel hub connected to the crankshaft, an outer metal inertia ring, and an inner rubber flex ring which lites to the crankshaft twist. Another important role of the harmonic balancer is to make the engine run smoothly, if the rubber has worn out due to ageing or some other reason, there will be excessive vibrations and there are chances of damager to the crank shaft. Different types of harmonic balancers, the standard original equipment (OE) and performance, may be installed in Dodge Nitro vehicles. Although OE harmonic balancers are developed for standard factory engine, performance harmonic balancer can be used for modified engines which require protection against raised vibration at different RPMs. Some of these performance options are the traditional performance camshaft, viscous fluid performance camshaft, and multi-piece camshaft, all these have undergone safety testing at higher RPM values and are incorporated with parts such as 360-degree timing marks for engine tuning.

Dodge Nitro Harmonic Balancer Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Harmonic Balancer and Crankshaft Pulley on Dodge Nitro?
    A:
Before servicing or repairing the harmonic balancer and crankshaft pulley, disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Then, take out the accessory Drive Belt by first noticing that the transmission cooler line is connected to the shroud below and to the right. Tests have revealed that the harmonic balancer bolt must be removed and the balancer must be pulled out using Special Tools 8513 Insert and 1026 Three Jaw Puller.
  • Q: How to Install a Harmonic Balancer on Dodge Nitro?
    A:
Always clean both the Crankshaft nose and harmonic balancer bore well to protect them from harm as you mount the harmonic balancer. Set the crankshaft harmonic balancer slot over the key on the crankshaft and slide the harmonic balancer onto the crankshaft just a bit. Installing the Harmonic Balancer Installer 8512A means threading the nut on first, adding the roller bearing onto the threaded rod with its hardened surface toward the nut and finally the hardened washer. Cover the threads of the threaded rod with Mopar(R) Nickel Anti-Seize or Loctite No. 771. Place the Harmonic Balancer Installer 8512A in the crankshaft, hold the harmonic balancer in place and tighten the crankshaft harmonic balancer bolt until it reaches 175 Nm (130 ft. lbs.). When that's done, put the accessory Drive Belt over the pulleys and hook up the negative cable to the battery.
