The first thing to do when servicing or fixing the turn signals is to cut off the negative battery cable. Disconnect the driver side air bag from the steering wheel and, if the vehicle features speed control, disconnect both ends of the steering wheel wire at the speed control switches. Use a steering wheel puller (Special Tool C-3428-B) to take the steering wheel off after first taking out the bolt fixing the steering wheel to the shaft. Get the knee blocker out of the instrument panel and remove the tilt steering column lever if there is one, using a quick drag away from the steering column. Remove the screws from the lower steering column shroud attaching them to the upper shroud and then pull off the front and both sides of the lower shroud from the upper shroud by snapping them loose. Lower the plastic cowl and push it towards the instrument panel to remove the hooks on the upper shroud. Unfasten the two screws holding the upper shroud to the steering column and take away the upper shroud. Take off the tie wraps on the lower wire harnesses, then nick the screw in the center and disconnect the harness parts. Separate the two multi-function switch wiring from the insulator on the steering column. Get rid of the screws holding the multi-function switch to the steering column and remove the multi-function switch. Place the multi-function switch on the column above the steering wheel and use a torque driver to tighten the two screws to 6 Nm (53 in. lbs.). Make sure the wire harnesses are not pinched as you engage both switch wire harness connectors. Then connect the two halves of the steering column connector without stretching the wires, apply the securing screw and tighten it to 4.5 Nm (40 in. lbs.). On both sides, put two additional lower wire harness wraps at the exact same spots where the old ones were located. Check that the mounting stud for the upper steering column shroud is flush with the shaft, hold the shroud above the steering column, tighten each of the screws to 1.4 Nm (12 in. lbs.) and then slide the shroud downward. Grab the hooks from the lower shroud and press them into the pivots of the upper shroud which will allow you to raise the lower shroud as you snap everything together. At the bottom part of the lower shroud, add and tighten the two screws to 3.4 Nm (30 in. lbs.). If your car includes a tilt steering column lever, put it in the open receptacle and then push it into place. Put the knee blocker on the instrument panel and then slide the steering wheel onto the upper steering shaft, matching the alignment splines. Secure the nut on the steering wheel tight enough at 61 Nm or 45 ft. lbs. If your vehicle comes with speed control, restore vehicle speed control wiring by connecting the steering wheel connectors to the speed control switches and check the correct routing of the harnesses. After that, attach the driver side air bag module to the steering wheel and reattach the negative battery cable.
