Dodge Ram 1500 Van Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
    A:
Before servicing or repairing the timing chain, take out the battery negative cable and drain the cooling system. Open the cover of the timing chain, turn the crankshaft until #1 TDC shows on both timing marks and then close the cover. After that, unscrew the bolt holding the camshaft sprocket in place and get rid of the timing chain, along with the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets. Put the crankshaft sprocket on the crankshaft, place the screwdriver between the sprocket and the tensioner shoe, squeeze the shoe with the screwdriver until the holes line up, then slip a suitable pin into the holes as the screwdriver is removed. While changing the tensioner assembly, first remove the three block bolts from the tensioner and take out the tensioner assembly proper. Should the tensioner assembly be replaced during installation, put in the new tensioner and its mounting bolts, tightening them to 24 Nm (210 in. lbs.). Draw an imaginary center line through the centers of the cam and crank bores and put the timing marks of both sprockets directly on top of this line. Lift the sprockets and chain so they stay against the chain before putting each sprocket gently over its shaft and then check that the timing marks are aligned with each other if required. Secure the camshaft bolt with a torque of 68 Nm (50 ft. pounds) and then pull the tensioner pin out to make sure both tensioner and camshaft marks are set properly. Place the timing cover into position, refill the cooling system, bring back the negative cable to its old spot and start the engine to conduct the leak checks.
