Dodge Ram 2500 Clutch Disc Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to remove the Clutch Disc on Dodge Ram 2500?
    A:
In order to remove the clutch disc, support the engine with a wood block and adjustable jack stand to prevent strain on the engine mounts. After that take off the transmission and transfer case if so equipped. In case the pressure plate will be reused, use paint or a scriber to mark the position on the flywheel. Similarly, mark the location on the pressure plate adjacent to the bolt holes with an L or a circle and X. Put the clutch alignment tool into the pressure plate and into the pilot bushing; this will keep the disc in place while you remove the bolts. To prevent warping, loosen the pressure plate bolts gradually in a diagonal manner, a few threads at a time. Ultimately, detach the bolts completely after removing the pressure plate, disc and final alignment tool.
  • Q:
What pre-installation steps are required for the Clutch Disc on a Diesel engine with a Dual Mass Flywheel and self-adjusting pressure plate on Dodge Ram 2500?
    A:
Before the clutch disc is mounted on the Diesel engine with Dual Mass Flywheel and self-adjusting pressure plate, the resetting of the pressure plate must be done to avoid damaging the clutch disc. First, check the runout and free operation of the new clutch plate. The crankshaft pilot bearing shall be lubricated with NLGI - 2 rated grease. Fit the clutch alignment tool in the clutch disc hub with the raised side facing away from the flywheel. Remember that the flywheel side is imprinted on the disc face. Place the alignment tool into the bearing's pilot and position the disc on the flywheel. Put the pressure plate on the disc and on the flywheel. It is a good idea to replace the pressure plate when a worn clutch is replaced due to loss of clamp load over time. Adjust the pressure plate and keep it in place, install the bolts finger tight. To prevent the pressure plate cover from warping, and even bolt tightening is required. Using diagonally inward, and tightening a few threads at a time achieve a proper torque specification of 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) for V6 & V8 engines, and 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) for Diesel engines. Take out the release lever and release bearing from the clutch housing, applying Mopar(TM) high temperature bearing grease to the bore of the release bearing, the contact surfaces of the release lever and the release lever pivot stud. Using Mopar(TM) high temperature bearing grease, apply a light coat to the splines on the transmission input shaft, as well as the release bearing slide surface of the transmission front bearing retainer. Do not get the shaft splines too greasy, or the disc will become contaminated with grease. Begin by cleaning the pilot bearing surface. Subsequently, the release lever and bearing must be fitted into the clutch housing, ensuring proper installation of the spring clips that retain the lever on the pivot ball and release bearing. The release lever part number must be at the bottom of the transmission, right side up and stamped "I" facing the pivot ball side of the transmission. Once the transmission and transfer case (if available) are installed, check the clutch master cylinder for fluid level, followed by several uses of the pedal.
