To service or repair the wheel cylinder, take off the wheel and tire system, then remove the drum. Unplug the wheel cylinder brake line, set the return springs aside and push the brake shoes away from the push rods. After that, take away the cylinder attaching bolts to separate the cylinder from the support plate. Start by removing the push rods and boots, next press the pistons, cups and spring and expander out of the cylinder and finish with taking out the bleed screw. Do not use solvents other than brake cleaner or brake fluid on the cylinder and pistons and blast them dry with compressed air after cleaning, as shop towels or rags can drop small particles that cling to metal surfaces. If the cylinder bore looks a little rusty or discolored, that does not matter and should not affect the cylinder's operation; however, if the cylinder is scored, pitted or has severe corrosion, you should replace it, as honing won't work. Always examine the piston sides to make sure there are no signs of roughness such as scratches, score lines or rust and replace the damaged parts. Replace the piston cups, spring and expander with replacements, since they are not suitable for reuse, but the original dust boots may be used again if good. When assembling, coat the wheel cylinder bore, pistons, piston cups, spring and expander with clean brake fluid. The first piston should first go into the cylinder hole and then the first cup must be inserted so its lip is inward and the flat part contacts the piston. After that, place the spring and expander and lastly, add the other piston cup and piston. First, put boot-covers on each end of the cylinder, place the push rods into the boots and insert the cylinder bleed screw afterward. Use silicone sealer to make a bead on the support plate's hole for the cylinder mount, then install the bolts and tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). Affix the brake line to the cylinder, install the brake shoe return spring next, add the brake drum and at last, install the wheel and tire as they were. End the process by bleed the base brake system.
