Before performing any service on the pitman shaft seal, clean both the exposed end of the shaft and the housing with a wire brush. After removing the preload adjuster nut, turn the stub shaft using a 12 point socket, stopping at each end and counting how many revolutions it takes. Make sure the stub shaft is centered by turning it from the stop side until you reach half the total shown on the scale. Then, remove the bolts that secure the side cover, lift off the cover as well as the gasket and pitman shaft and make sure the pitman shaft is centralized to fit in the housing. Remove the pitman shaft from the side cover and use a seal pick to get out the dust seal from the housing, being sure not to damage the housing bore. First, take the retaining ring out with your pliers, then the washer using fingers and finally the oil seal using your seal pick. With a bearing driver and handle, take the pitman shaft bearing out of its housing. Make sure the pitman shaft bearing is in the housing while using a bearing driver and handle and then use the special grease to coat the oil seal and washer. Place the retainer ring and back it up with the back up washer, while using snap ring pliers. Cover the dust seal with the special grease and fix it in place using a driver and clip. Carry the pitman shaft over to its seat in the side cover and secure it with screws. Come back to the preload adjuster nut later, after you make the Over-Center Rotation Torque adjustment. Janess place the gasket inside the side cover, fold the tabs around the edges and assemble the pitman shaft assembly and side cover into the housing. Secure the bolts at the cover side, tightening them to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.) and make the last over-center rotation torque adjustment.
