Because the
Air Bag system is very sensitive, you must first unhook and isolate the battery's negative cable and wait around two minutes for the capacitor to drain before checking or servicing it. Straighten out the
Steering Wheel so the front wheels are pointed forward. Disconnect the driver air bag module and then remove the steering wheel with a steering wheel puller (Special Tool C-3428B). Get to the wiring by removing the two shroud covers on the steering wheel and unplug the wire connector that connects the Clock Spring with the instrument panel harness at its base. If necessary, carefully lift the locating fingers from the steering column; if the Driver air bag Module has been used or the Clock Spring is damaged, it must be replaced. When installing, attach the Clock Spring to the steering column, checking its position and link the Clock Spring wiring to the instrument panel wire harness, so the locking tabs are clicked and the wire locator tabs are secure. Secure the steering column shrouds, remembering they should hide the air bag wire within them. While the front wheels are straight ahead, fix the steering wheel, matching the flats at the hub to the formations inside the Clock Spring and run the wiring through the upper and lower holes in the steering wheel hub. While tensioning the steering wheel nut, make sure not to pull the wires. Join the horn switch wire and then the air bag wire to the Driver air bag Module, put the Driver air bag Module in place and tighten the screws to 10.2 Nm (90 in. lbs.) of torque. At this point, do not connect the negative cable; use the testing procedures for the air bag system.
