Dodge Viper Piston Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Are Pistons Maintained Alongside Connecting Rods on Dodge Viper?
    A:
As an assembly, the pistons and connecting rods are serviced and there are right and left bank assemblies for each side. Install the piston rings first, dip the head and rings into engine oil, use the ring compressor to slide over the piston and ensure the position of the rings stays unchanged. Turn the Crankshaft until the connecting rod journal hits the base of its motion and the piston is centered in the cylinder bore, pointing the arrow on top toward the engine's front. Put in a new internal connecting Rod Bearing both inside the connecting rod and in its cap. Lift up the piston and rod assembly by the cap from above the block and set it into the cylinder bore, tapping the piston down as you guide the rod over the crankshaft journal. To prevent engine harm, fit the rods with the large cutout remaining on the crankshaft side and the small cutout on the side farther from it. Seat the rod cap and tighten the bolts, checking that the engine oil is not getting into the threads. Bolts are to be tightened up to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.) then rotate the engine until an extra 45 degrees. Put in the crankshaft oil scraper, place the oil pump pick-up and tighten both of their nuts to a torque of 28 Nm (248 in. lbs.). Put in the oil pump pick-up tube using replacement o-rings and tighten its bolt to 11 Nm (95 in. lbs.). After that, add the cylinder heads and Oil Pan to the engine.
  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Piston and Connecting Rod on Dodge Viper?
    A:
It helps to start with removing the engine, then take out the cylinder heads and the Oil Pan to remove the piston and connecting rod. Then, take away the engine oil scraper and the link connecting the oil pump pick-up tube and its o-ring. It is important never to stamp or punch the connecting rods to stop potential damage. Verify each connecting rod and cap to determine their cylinder number, marking them with a permanent ink or paint marker if needed; just be sure not to harm the damaged joints because this can cause engine problems. Take out the bolts holding the connecting rod and the cap and gently pull each piston and rod assembly away from the block, avoiding contact with the crankshaft journals. Once the bearing is removed, apply the cap to the rod it fits with.
