How to Adjust Electric Side-View Car Mirrors and What Should You Do If They Stop Working on Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The electric side-view mirrors can be adjusted up-and-down and left-to-right using a driver's side switch on the left door trim panel. Models with factory-installed dual power mirrors feature a heater grid behind the mirror glass to clear fog, ice, or snow, and if a heater grid fails, the entire mirror must be replaced. The heater grid switches and heated mirror system indicator light are part of the heater/air conditioning control panel on the dash, and if any of these components fail, the entire assembly should be replaced. The heated mirror relay is found in one of the fuse and relay boxes. The power mirror control switch includes a LEFT-RIGHT selector to direct voltage to the desired side-view mirror. With the ignition in the ACC position, the windows should be rolled down while operating the mirror control switch through all functions for both mirrors, listening for the sound of the electric motors. If the motors are audible but the mirror glass does not move, the drive mechanism inside the mirror is likely defective, requiring a mirror replacement. If the mirrors do not operate and no sound is heard, the fuse in one of the fuse and relay boxes should be checked. If the fuse is intact, the door panel must be removed to access the back of the mirror control switch for voltage testing. Voltage should be present at one terminal; if absent, the wiring between the fuse panel and the switch needs inspection. If voltage is present, the switch should be disconnected and continuity checked in all operating positions, replacing it if continuity is lacking. After reconnecting the switch, the wire going from the switch to ground should be located, and a jumper wire connected to test the ground connection. If the mirror still does not function, it should be removed to check for voltage at the mirror wires with the ignition ON and the selector switch positioned correctly. Voltage should be present in each switch position except the neutral position; if not, the wiring between the mirror and control switch should be examined for issues. If voltage is confirmed, the mirror should be tested off the vehicle with jumper wires, replacing it if it fails the test.

With the ignition in the ACC position, the windows should be rolled down while operating the mirror control switch through all functions for both mirrors, listening for the sound of the electric motors. If the motors are audible but the mirror glass does not move, the drive mechanism inside the mirror is likely defective, requiring a mirror replacement. If the mirrors do not operate and no sound is heard, the fuse in one of the fuse and relay boxes should be checked. If the fuse is intact, the door panel must be removed to access the back of the mirror control switch for voltage testing. Voltage should be present at one terminal; if absent, the wiring between the fuse panel and the switch needs inspection. If voltage is present, the switch should be disconnected and continuity checked in all operating positions, replacing it if continuity is lacking. After reconnecting the switch, the wire going from the switch to ground should be located, and a jumper wire connected to test the ground connection. If the mirror still does not function, it should be removed to check for voltage at the mirror wires with the ignition ON and the selector switch positioned correctly. Voltage should be present in each switch position except the neutral position; if not, the wiring between the mirror and control switch should be examined for issues. If voltage is confirmed, the mirror should be tested off the vehicle with jumper wires, replacing it if it fails the test.
