The
Air Bag system must be put on air bag "off" mode before servicing the steering column to keep you safe. It is very important to block the
Clock Spring from moving as you remove and replace the speedometer, to avoid damaging the unit. Start by aligning the front wheels with the front of the car and take out the black battery cable. Then, take out the air bag by using the correct service guidelines. Should your car have cruise control, take the clock spring harness out of the connector on the cruise switch on the steering wheel. Place the puller firmly around the steering wheel so its bolts are in the correct keyholes and not on the clock spring, to avoid damaging it. Installation involves placing the steering wheel again, then tighten the nut to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). If your car has cruise control, link the cruise harness at the steering wheel to the clock spring harness, replace the air bag and lastly reattach the negative battery cable.
