The engine torque is sent to the gearbox through the Jeep Clutch Disc, which then releases it for a smooth shifting. From 1945, the brand has infused rugged design into daily life with vehicles that take a beating on the trails or potholes. Drivers enjoy the open-air feeling, the boxy stance, and the adventurous vibe of nothing ahead being off limits. The famous Selec-Terrain traction system allows you to switch from snow to sand to mud with ease without concern for grip. The new age dashboards come with bright digital screens, voice control, and quick over the air updates, so maps stay fresh while wheels stay dirty. There is a tight-knit worldwide community exchanging trail tips, gear hacks, and trip invites, showing that adventure can happen on weeknight errands and cross country expeditions. The combination of ruggedness, technology, and bonding keeps loyal Jeep owners happy with a solid market value year after year. Inside a vehicle's drivetrain, a Clutch Disc is positioned between the flywheel and the pressure plate. Its organic linings create a grip whenever the pedal is up. It releases its grip when the pedal is down. Contact and hub coil springs are cushioned by a marcel spring in an effort to absorb crank pulses that could jar the gearbox of the Jeep. With every launch, the unit warms up, but the materials shed heat and keep giving passing torque for thousands of miles. With minor inspections, a Jeep operator can swap in a new Clutch Disc to keep the Jeep crawling, climbing, and commuting. As slipping begins, the replacement of the Clutch Disc brings back a crisp engagement and the Jeep sense of direct control.

Jeep Clutch Disc Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service the Clutch Disc on Jeep Liberty?
    A:
In the clutch disc repair, first the transmission is removed. If the clutch does not require replacement, identify the face of the flywheel at the pressure plate with paint or a scriber for assembly reference. To avoid warping the pressure plate, it is necessary to loosen the bolts evenly and rotate them so that the tension in the springs is released. After the initial loosening stage is complete, you can remove the pressure plate bolts, remove the pressure plate, and remove the disc. With the help of the 180 grit emery cloth, lightly scuff sand the flywheel face. Next, clean the flywheel face with wax and grease remover. Use Mopar high-temperature bearing grease or the equivalent to grease the pilot bearing. The new clutch disc shall be checked for runout, functioning and for smooth sliding on the transmission input shaft splines. Check face runout with a dial indicator at the disc hub 6 mm from the outer edge of the facing, with the disc on the input shaft. If the runout exceeds 0.5 mm, obtain another clutch disc. Place the clutch disc on the flywheel with the flywheel-scribed symbol facing it. If it has no mark, on a 3.7L engine the flat side of the disc hub goes towards the flywheel and on a 2.4L engine towards the transmission. In order to do a clutch pressure plate installation insert the alignment tool through the clutch disc and into the pilot bearing. Then place the clutch pressure plate over the disc and on the flywheel. Apply finger tightness to the pressure plate bolts using factory bolts only of the correct size so that the thread does not interfere with the Dual Mass Flywheel. Evenly and in rotation, tighten the pressure plate bolts a few threads at a time, ensuring that they are tightened to the correct torque to prevent distortion of the pressure plate. For 2.4L engines, tighten the bolts to a torque of 31 Nm and 50 Nm for 3.7L engines. Apply Mopar high temperature bearing grease (or equivalent) on the clutch disc hub and transmission input shaft splines, but avoid over-lubricating which can cause grease to contaminate the disc. Eventually, fit the transmission.
  • Q: How to install the Clutch Disc on gas engines on Jeep Wrangler?
    A:
To install a clutch disc on the gas engines, lightly scuff sand the flywheel face with 180 grit emery cloth followed by a clean with a wax and grease remover. Grease the pilot bearing with Mopar high temperature bearing grease or similar product. Verify that the new clutch disc slides freely over the transmission input shaft splines. Similarly, check its runout by placing it on the input shaft and measuring with a dial indicator at the disc hub 6 mm (1/4 in.) from the outer edge of the facing. If runout exceeds 0.5 mm (0.020 in.), get another clutch disc. Install the clutch disc on the flywheel and the flywheel marked side of the clutch disc should face the flywheel, and if no marking just the flat side of the disc hub should face the flywheel. Put the clutch alignment tool through the clutch disc and into the pilot bearing, and then place the clutch pressure plate over the disc and on the flywheel. Install the finger-tight pressure plate bolts using only factory bolts the correct size and not any bolt that may be handy which might cause insufficient thread engagement or interference with the Dual Mass Flywheel. After lubricating the threads with clean oil, tighten the pressure plate bolts evenly in a rotational pattern a few threads at a time to the specified torque of 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.). This will prevent distortion of the pressure plate. Finally, install the transmission applying a light coat of Mopar high temperature bearing grease or equivalent on the hub of the clutch disc and the splines of the transmission input shaft. Do not over-apply lubrication as this will cause grease contamination of the disc.
