The Jeep Commander Starter is a device that converts battery electricity into mechanical force to crank the engine. The unit draws its power through heavy-gauge wiring. It has an externally mounted solenoid that receives its signal from the ignition switch, relay, and safety switch. The engine cannot be engaged while the vehicle is engaged. Within the Starter case, an armature rotates between field coils or permanent magnets. When current flows, electromagnetic action rotates the armature and turns the Starter drive. The solenoid pushes the drive gear into mesh with the flywheel or flexplate ring gear while an overrunning clutch releases the connection as soon as the engine fires to avoid damage. There are versions that use a gear reduction layout routing power through reduction gears for added torque before reaching the drive. The neutral safety switch of automatic transmission models and the clutch switch in manual versions are designed to allow the Jeep Commander to function only when it is safe to start. Essentially, the Jeep Commander Starter consists of a coordination of electrical and mechanical assemblies made for starting the engine at the turn of a key or button. The Jeep Commander Starter ensures reliable performance for daily driving.

Jeep Commander Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Starter Motor on 3.7/4.7L Engines on Jeep Commander?
    A:
Replacements or repairs on the starter motor on 3.7/4.7L model should be done by disconnecting the negative Battery Cable and before lifting and supporting the vehicle. Should the vehicle have 4WD, remove its front Drive Shaft before servicing. On these 4WD vehicles, under the transmission, you'll find a support bracket between the axle and the transmission; draw out the bolts supporting the bracket and then pull on it slightly to reach the bottom bolt for the starter. Drain the transmission fluid from the vehicle if it has an automatic gear box, removing the two screws. Move the starter motor until the nose of the starter pinion housing can pass through the housing; support the starter motor above the wire and not let it hang. Bend the nose downward and move the starter motor to the side so the nut on the battery positive wire harness is easy to remove from the solenoid terminal, remembering to seat the starter motor on stable supports. Remove the positive battery cable wire harness connector's eyelet from the solenoid battery terminal stud. Disconnect the battery positive cable wire harness connector from the solenoid terminal connector receptacle and after that, remove the starter motor.
  • Q: How to Maintain a Starter Motor on Jeep Commander?
    A:
Begin by disengaging the negative Battery Cable, next disconnect and remove the module from the starter and support your car. If the vehicle is 4WD, take out the front Drive Shaft. When you have a 4WD with that type of transmission, remove the support bracket bolts, then pop the support bracket to the side so you can get to the bottom starter bolt. Automatic vehicles require you to take off two bolts. Get the front of the starter motor near enough so that the "nose" of the starter pinion housing just comes clear of the housing, holding the motor still as you move it. Place the nose of the wrench under the battery positive cable wire harness connector eyelet and screw it clockwise, remove the nut from the solenoid battery terminal stud and then pull the cable wire harness connector away from the stud. Remove the positive battery connection to the solenoid receptacle and take out the starter motor. Insert the wire from the solenoid into the starter motor and hook the battery cable to the solenoid stud. For installation, tighten the battery cable nut to 19 ft. lbs. (25 N.m). Secure the starter motor underneath the transmission and for an automatic, put the cooler tube bracket into its bracket place. Insert both bolts and tighten them to a torque of 50 ft. lbs. (68 N.m). For some 4WD vehicles, tighten the two support bracket bolts on the transmission and if they have 4WD, insert the front drive shaft. After that, let down the car and reconnect the negative cable on the battery.
