For easy rack and pinion removal, begin by straightening the wheels and centering the
Steering Wheel. With power steering drained or siphoned, remove the bolt holding the column coupler shaft and separate the shaft from the rack and pinion. On 8-cylinder engines, power steering lines are found beneath the car and on 6-cylinder engines, the lines are both removed from the rack and pinion. Lift and hold the vehicle and afterward, remove the front tires. Free up the tie rod end jam nuts and, if you have one, take out the oil drip tray. Take out the outer tie rod end from the knuckle using Ball Joint Remover 8677. If you have one, take off the front skid plate and splash shield. On 4x4 vehicles, extract the front axle. Also, for 8-cylinder engines, detach both the pressure and return lines from the rack and pinion. Then, take out the two bolts holding the rack and pinion. Because turning the tie rods will move rightwards when turning the rack and pinion to the left, first take the rack and pinion and set it to the right of the vehicle, rotating it all the way left so it clears the
Control Arms, then lower the left side and take out the rack and pinion. Whenever required, remove the outer tie rod ends from the rack and pinion.
