The Jeep Commander Starter Relay sends power from the battery to the starter solenoid, which cranks the engine when the key is turned to start. The relay receives a low-current command from the ignition switch or Powertrain Control Module and then switches to its on position. The Starter Relay stays in its on position while the key is in the start position. An electromechanical Starter Relay controls high current in the Jeep Commander starting circuit only when necessary. This prevents unwanted load on the wiring. When the Starter Relay becomes stuck in the on position, the starter remains meshed with the flywheel. This damages the transmission or other parts of the starting system. Alternatively, if the Starter Relay remains stuck off, the engine won't crank at all. In other words, no-start situation. Every Jeep Commander utilizes fast switching of this compact unit to coordinate battery energy with the starter assembly. As a reliable component, Starter Relay protects the drivetrain of Jeep Commander by limiting the engagement time and allowing proper cranking of the engine.

Jeep Commander Starter Relay Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Where is the Starter Relay located, and what steps should be taken to inspect and install it on Jeep Commander?
    A:
The power distribution centre contains the starter relay which is specified by a label on the cover of power distribution centre. Start by disconnecting and isolating the negative battery cable. Next, take off the cover on the Power Distribution Center and see the relay. Then, take out the starter relay from the PDC.
