Jeep Commander Clock Spring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Clock Spring Assembly on Jeep Commander?
    A:
Before removing the Clock Spring, disable the SRS by disconnecting and insulating the battery negative cable, giving it two minutes to drain the system capacitor. The replacement Clock Spring is already pre-aligned, with a plastic locking pin that stays put until you attach the Steering Wheel. Removing the pin earlier demands that you center the Clock Spring again. Set your steering wheel straight and lock it before you begin the drive. Put the multifunction switch jumper harness from your old Clock Spring into the new Clock Spring or connect a new one to it. Fit the Clock Spring over the steering column upper shaft and then connect the three instrument panel wire harness connections. Slide the Clock Spring over the steering column housing and put in the two screws that secure the back, as well as the one for the face of the Clock Spring for a temporary fit. Attach the screws from lower right to upper left and upper right with 3 Nm (27 in. lbs. torque) so the steering wheel turns quietly. Put the left and right multifunction switches onto the Clock Spring and then anchor the upper and lower shrouds on the steering column. Raise the steering column to its highest place, lock it and install the steering wheel back in position. Remove the plastic pin from the Clock Spring and then put the driver Air Bag back onto the steering wheel. As the last step, bring the red cable from the negative terminal and install it on the battery.
  • Q: How to Install a Clock Spring Assembly on Jeep Commander?
    A:
Before handling the Clock Spring assembly, first using a wrench, uninstall the negative Battery Cable to disable the SRS and isolate the battery, then wait two minutes so the Air Bag system is discharged and will not accidentally activate when you handle the Clock Spring. The service replacement Clock Spring is already centered and held with a molded plastic locking pin; until the Steering Wheel is on, you should not remove this pin or it will need to be re-centered. Straighten and lock the steering wheel before you start. When you install a new Clock Spring, move the multifunction switch jumper harness from the previous module or use a new one. Put the Clock Spring onto the upper shaft of the steering column and put back the three connectors to the instrument panel harness. Insert the Clock Spring into the steering column housing and only loosely set the screws that secure the back and face of the Clock Spring. Fix the screws in the sequence of lower right, upper left and upper right at 3 Nm (27 in. lbs.) so the steering wheel won't make any noise as it turns. First, put the left and right multifunction switches back on the Clock Spring and afterwards, attach the upper and lower shrouds to the steering column. Raise the steering column fully and lock it and after that attach the steering wheel again. Remove the plastic locking pin to keep the Clock Spring centered and fix the driver air bag back in place. Afterwards, attach the battery negative cable again.
