The first step in repairing the steering is to brush the exposed places on the pitman shaft and its housing with a wire brush. Using a wrench, rotate the stub shaft from the first stop to the last, keeping track of how many turns you complete and center the stub shaft with about half those turns to confirm the pitman shaft isn't touching the housing. Loosen the bolts holding the pitman shaft cover and remove the cover, plus the pitman shaft cover O-ring. Simply use Puller 7794-A and Slide Hammer C-637 to take away the pitman shaft dust shield, followed by using snap ring pliers to take out the oil seal retaining ring from above. Remove the metal back up washer and the plastic back up washer found in the housing with Puller 7794-A and Slide Hammer C-637. Feed Drop Driver 8277 into the top bearing and line it up with the lower bearing, then fit Handle C-4171 to lift off the bearing. Hold the Driver 8277 and Handle C-4171 as you fold out the handle to remove the upper bearing. When assembling, put the upper pitman shaft bearing in place using Drivet 8294 and Handle C-4171 to slide it into the housing until the driver stop, so the part number faces the driver. Secure the lower pitman shaft bearing by driving its other part, together with Driver 8294 and Handle C-4171, into the housing until the bearing shoulder is fitting in place. After greasing the oil seal and washers with the available grease, use Driver 8294 and Handle C-4171 to insert the oil seal, the plastic back up washer (with its inner lip down) and finally the metal back up washer. Use snap ring pliers to put the retainer ring in place, apply special grease to the dust seal and install both with Driver 8294 and Handle C-4171. Attach a new O-ring to the pitman shaft cover, then push the assembly into the housing, use the cover bolts to fasten it tightly (62 Nm or 46 ft. lbs.) prior to performing the over-center rotation adjustment.
