Jeep Liberty Starter Relay allows battery power to be sent to the starter solenoid for cranking the engine. Within the electrical architecture of the Jeep Liberty, the Starter Relay is located in the starter control circuit. The ignition switch or Powertrain Control Module switches the Starter Relay. The relay moves to an on position once the power is applied. It remains there while the key is turned to start. After the end of the command, the internal contacts of the Starter Relay switch to off, interrupting the flow of current and ensuring that the starter does not remain engaged with the flywheel. A working Starter Relay thus protects the transmission and other starting parts from damage while allowing the engine to crank. At times the part will fail and lock on. This keeps the starter engaged and can wear out components. Sometimes the part will lock off and cause a no-start. The Jeep Liberty relies on a properly functioning Starter Relay for dependable startup. No other style or version has been identified for this Jeep Liberty system, so the single style described performs this important job for the whole range.

Jeep Liberty Starter Relay Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Where is the Starter Relay Located and How to Service It on Jeep Liberty?
    A:
The starter relay (SR) position is in the Power Distribution Center (PDC). The PDC cover features a label to help identify its location. To service the relay, first, remove the PDC cover and then pull the relay out of the PDC. Check relay terminal and PDC connector terminal for damage/corrosion and repair as necessary before installing relay. Further, make sure that pin height is even across all PDC connector terminals and repair if needed before installation. To install the relay, place it back in the PDC and replace the PDC cover.
