Jeep Liberty Steering Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Shaft on Jeep Liberty?
    A:
The first step to working on the intermediate shaft is to disconnect the negative Battery Cable and take off the knee blocker cover and knee blocker. Turn the wheel so your tires face forward and lock it with the ignition. Then remove the lower column pinch bolt which should allow you to pull the steering coupler shaft from the column. Pull the intermediate shaft seal off by inserting the four tangs (1) into the panel around it and then take out the center support bearing bracket attached to the shock tower mount. After that, remove the pinch bolt at the steering gear (4) and the coupler (3) there, as well as the intermediate shaft (2) from under your car. Before installing the intermediate shaft, take out the center support bracket attached to the steering shaft. If the center support bearing bracket was taken off and is being looked at again, install it on the steering shaft first and tighten it to 14 Nm (125 inch lbs.). Afterwards, connect the intermediate shaft (2) to the vehicle and the coupler (3) at the steering gear and then place the lower coupler pinch bolt (4) at the steering gear, tighten it to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Mount the center support bearing bracket to the shock tower holes first and then push the intermediate shaft seal inside to make the tangs' (1) tabs fit into the mounting holes in the panel. After that, put the steering coupler shaft onto the column, then secure the upper pinch bolt (1) with a tightening force of 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Turn the ignition key to unlock the wheel, mount the knee blocker cover and knee blocker and finally reconnect the negative battery cable last.
