The Timing Belt in Jeep Liberty cars plays an extremely important function of ensuring that the crankshaft and camshaft are in harmony in terms of their operation to ensure that engine valves are opened and closed at specific times. This is made possible by a belt that has a tensioner as well as an idler pulleys that ensures that the engine times its operation to perfection. Year after year, Jeep Liberty models have mainly incorporated rubber timing belts which are strengthened with fibers, these belts are relatively cheaper, quite friendly to the ears due to their low friction rates as compared on older types of gears. Although today's belt display variations with curved teeth to increase durability and reduce the noise being made, it is nevertheless important to periodically examine and replace worn belts to avoid potential harm to the engine due to belt failure. As for Jeep Liberty's owners it is crucial to follow the manufacturer's recommended intervals of the replacement in order to preserve the engine parts and their functionality.

Jeep Liberty Timing Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Timing Belt on Jeep Liberty?
    A:
After unscrewing the upper cover and the housing, also remove the clean air tube. Lift the vehicle up using a hoist, then take off the accessory Drive Belts. Also, you have to remove the Crankshaft vibration damper and the air conditioner/generator Belt Tensioner and pulley assembly next. Excessitly remove the bolts securing the timing belt lower front cover and the cover from the bottom. Then, lower the vehicle and remove the bolts and timing belt upper front cover from the top. Before taking off the belt, make sure that the marks around the crankshaft and Camshaft in line and that the TDC mark on the oil pump connector lines up with the mark on the crankshaft. With a 6 mm Allen wrench, loosen the belt tensioner and then use a 1/8 inch or 3 mm Allen wrench through the hole at the front, turned counterclockwise to lock it. After you take out the timing belt, disconnect the negative battery cable and use the required Special Tools 6793 and C-4685-C2 to uninstall the crankshaft sprocket. If the timing belt gets dirty, discard it instead of cleaning it. Use a proper solvent to clean every sprocket. When installing, first use Special Tool 6792 to ensure the crankshaft sprocket is at its factory depth, then install the crankshaft sprocket and timing belt and finally check that the crankshaft and top and bottom cams have their marks properly aligned. Screw in the timing belt with your correct tool, starting from the crankshaft and moving around the water pump sprocket, idler pulley, camshaft sprockets and tensioner. To line up the marks on the sprockets, turn the exhaust camshaft sprocket counterclockwise. Adjust the belt tensioner by rotating the top plate counterclockwise and make certain that the spring tang is in the setting notch as you torque the tensioner lock nut to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.). Turn the crankshaft clockwise two full times so that the belt is seated and check that the timing marks are lined up and that the spring tang doesn't go over the tolerance line. If the tensioning does not hold, go through the process again. At the end, put back the timing belt front covers and fasteners, the belt tensioner and pulley for the air conditioning/generator belt, the muffler for the crankshaft vibration damper, all accessory drive belts, the splash shield for the drive belt and the air cleaner housing, upper cover and clean air tube.
  • Q: How to Replace a Timing Belt and Sprocket on Jeep Liberty?
    A:
Take off the air cleaner upper cover, housing and clean air tube before lifting the car on a hoist and getting rid of the accessory Drive Belts. After that, remove the Crankshaft vibration damper and the air conditioner/generator Belt Tensioner and pulley assembly as well. Take out the bolts that secure the timing belt lower front cover and the cover itself, then drop the car and unwind what holds the timing belt upper front cover and its cover. Rotation of the engine on the crankshaft is important to bring the crankshaft and Camshaft marks into alignment and before removing the belt, make certain the oil pump housing TDC mark is lined up with the TDC mark on the crankshaft sprocket. Before getting rid of the timing belt, insert a 6 mm Allen wrench into the tensioner, add a 1/8" or 3 mm Allen wrench into the pin hole up front and rotate the tensioner pushrod counterclockwise for safety. Remove the cable from the negative terminal on the battery, then use Special Tools 6793 to remove the timing belt and the crankshaft sprocket. Avoid cleaning a timing belt, especially if dirt or debris has gotten on it; if it's contaminated, just swap it out. Make sure you clean the sprockets with the right solvent, wiping out every groove to remove dirt and dust. Set the installation depth of the crankshaft sprocket with Special Tool 6792 to assure the timing belt and the engine are not damaged. Location the crankshaft sprocket according to the arrow on the oil pump housing for TDC and place the exhaust camshaft sprocket a half turn under the intake camshaft sprocket so that their arrows point upward. The timing belt should be installed from the crankshaft, around the water pump sprocket, diagonally across to the idler pulley, then to the camshaft sprockets and finally back to the tensioner. Align the teeth on the camshaft sprocket and the engine pulley so marks are opposite while loosening the motor mounts. Push an Allen wrench into the hexagon opening at the pulley's top and rotate it counterclockwise until the pegs match, then tighten the tensioner nut on top using 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) of torque. With the tools removed, crank the crankshaft clockwise by two full turns so that the belt settles in place and you can check that the timing marks are correct. Verify that the spring tang complies with the tolerance; if that's not the case, tighten or loosen the spring again. After that, add the timing belt front covers and bolts, the air conditioning/generator belt tensioner and pulley, the crankshaft vibration damper, the accessory drive belts, the drive belt splash shield and the air cleaner housing, upper cover and clean air tube.
