Cleaning the area around the exposes end of the pitman shaft and housing with a wire brush comes first in servicing the seal. Unscrew the tension change nut, after which you rotate the stub shaft with a 12 point socket from one end to the other. Put the stub shaft in the middle by turning it for half of the full number of turns. Next, get rid of the side cover bolts and release the side cover, gasket and pitman shaft together from the engine, making sure the pitman shaft is centered where it won't clash with the housing. Take out the pitman shaft from the side cover, then with a seal pick, remove the dust seal from the housing, ensuring this does not damage the bore. With snap ring pliers, remove the retaining ring and then take out the washer and oil seal with a seal pick from the housing. Remove the pitman shaft bearing from inside the housing by using a bearing driver and handle. Pull out the piston and insert the upper pitman shaft bearing into the housing, first using Driver 8294, then adding Handle C-4171 to continue the process until you hear the driver bottom out. Attach the lower pitman shaft bearing to the other part of Driver 8294 and Handle C-4171 until the shoulder on the bearing fits against the housing. Before installing it, apply the recommended grease from the new seal to the oil seal and back up washers. Then use Hub Assembly Driver 8294 together with Handle C-4171 to place the oil seal. First, add the plastic back up washer, making certain its lip rests within the oil seal and then the metal back up washer. Use snap ring pliers to install the retainer again, lube the dust seal with the correct grease and add it back with the Driver 8294 and Handle C-4171. Secure a new pitman shaft cover O-ring and put the pitman shaft assembly into the housing. Afterwards, put in the cover bolts and make sure they reach 62 Nm (46 ft. lbs.) of torque, then conduct the over-center rotation twist adjustment.
