The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is a very important sensor in Jeep Wrangler vehicles, mainly because it feeds back details relating to the position of the throttle and the fuel system in the vehicle for optimum combustion. In electronic throttle control systems, the TPS plays a role in controlling positioning of the throttle; other refined sensors comprises the Closed Throttle Position Sensor (CTPS) which denotes that the throttle is closed completely. In addition to, in the modern TPS in Jeep Wranglers, non-contact technologies like Hall effect or magnetoresistive sensors are used which are more stable and accurate than the potentiometric sensors. Identifying any failure in the TPS is crucial since it affects the boost pressure and fuel economy thereby reducing the vehicle's performance and requiring replacement for normal driving.

Jeep Wrangler Throttle Position Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Throttle Position Sensor on the Throttle Body on Jeep Wrangler?
    A:
The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is fixed to the Throttle Body. Take off the air cleaner tube at the throttle body and then pull the TPS connector out from its electrical connector to detach the TPS. After that, remove the three TPS mounting screws and take off the TPS. When you install the throttle body, fit the end of the throttle shaft into the sensor's socket so a rotation of a few degrees is possible; if it stays unmoving, turn the throttle shaft over and slide it into the socket from the other side. TPS will experience a slight tension when it is rotated. Screw in the TPS and its attached screws to 7 N.m (60 in. lbs.) of tightness. Link the TPS connector and move the throttle by hand to watch for binding, then try starting the engine. Lastly, replace the air cleaner tube back on the throttle body.
