2000 Dodge Durango Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2000 Dodge Durango?
A: Remove the rack and pinion from the vehicle first to work on it. Remove the jam nut and then lift out the tie rod end with it. After that, take off the rubber boot's outer clamp and the inner clamp that holds them in place individually. Mark where the breather tube is on the steering arm before you take off the rubber boot on a 4x2 vehicle. Make sure to coat the inside of the boot outer groove (also called tie rod) with silicone and ensure the boot isn't twisted when installing. Tuck the breather tube below the reference mark on the rack and pinion and then fix the new boot over the housing for 4x2 cars. Place the small, inner clamp inside the rubber boot, then install the large snorkel clamp to the underside of the 4x2 vehicle. Following this, fit the outer clamp onto the inner tie rod and, next, the jam nut and tie rod end. After that, slide on the rack and pinion.
