2001 Dodge Durango Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: To begin with, raise and support the vehicle. After removing the nuts on the tie rod ends, grab your Puller C-3894-A to separate them from the knuckles. After that, separate the power steering lines from the rack and pinion, take out the lower coupler bolt and move the coupler away from the rack and pinion. When the mounting bolts are removed from the front crossmember, take the rack and pinion out. Check the bushings for damage or wear before installing the new rack and pinion and change any that look bad. Fix the unit into place on the front crossmember and turn the mounting bolts to 258 Nm (190 ft. lbs.). Slide the shaft coupler on the rack and pinion, add a new bolt, then tighten it to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). After cleaning the studs and tapers, attach the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles, tighten their nuts to 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.) and move on. Attach the power steering hoses to the rack and pinion, remove the support and lower your vehicle. After that, add fluid to your power steering and adjust the alignment toe position.
