2000 Dodge Neon Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2000 Dodge Neon?
A: Remove the ground side of the battery cable as the first step in working on the steering pump. Empty the power steering reservoir as much as you can and take off the belt from the pulley where it's attached to the power steering pump. Open the lock on the clamp for the return hose, slide it down the fitting and take the hose off the reservoir. Back the tube out to remove the securing nut on the power steering hose where it connects to the pump and take out the hose. Take out the mounting bolt holding the support bracket on the rear of the pump and loosen the two bolts that join the support bracket to the engine block. Twist around the three holding bolts that secure the pump to the cast bracket, accessed by the holes in the pump pulley and remove the power steering pump with reservoir. Set the power steering pump and reservoir on the engine and screw in the three holding bolts, ensuring they reach 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). Place the supporting bracket bolt into the rear of the pump, but don't tighten it fully. Fasten the two support bracket bolts in the engine block to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) and tighten the rear, main support bolt to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). Slide the drive belt onto the pulley first and wipe out all exposed ends of hoses and pump connections using a lint-free cloth. Set an O-ring on the power steering hose, grease it with clean power steering liquid and join the hose to the pressure fitting on the pump. Set the torque of the tube nut to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.). Put the return hose over the reservoir fitting and place the hose clamp under the edge of the fitting's bead. Next, complete the Power Steering Pump Initial Operation service which involves filling and purging the system and looking for any leaks.
