2000 Dodge Neon Timing Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Belt on 2000 Dodge Neon?
A: First, remove the accessory drive belts, then lift your vehicle on a hoist and take out the right inner splash shield. Then, take off the damper bolt and damper using 1026 three jaw puller and insert 6827-A. Then, remove the strut from the lower torque arm, lower the car and set a jack under the engine. Remove the upper torque strut, the bolt holding the right engine mount to the engine mount bracket and the power steering pump, keeping them on the side for now. Take off the engine mount bracket and open the front timing belt cover, bringing the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks into alignment before rotating the engine with the crankshaft to remove the timing belt. Press the rounded tip of an 8 mm Allen wrench into the hexagon opening found in front of the belt tensioner pulley and turn it counterclockwise until it hits the stop. While squeezing against the stop with the tensioner pulley, poke a 1/8" or 3 mm pin or Allen wrench through the left hole up to the locking hole and rotate the tensioner pulley back as you place the pin. While removing the timing belt, make sure not to turn the camshafts, so you don't harm the valves. The crankshaft and camshaft timing procedure requires you to move the oil pump housing arrow onto the crankshaft sprocket, while checking the 3 notches before TDC while backing it up. Match the mark on the sprocket with the arrow on the back of the timing belt cover to set the camshaft at TDC and turn the crankshaft to a position a half turn before that mark to prepare for installing the timing belt. Install the timing belt with the crankshaft end first and after that move it around the water pump sprocket and camshaft sprocket. By moving the crankshaft sprocket to TDC, allow the belt to slacken and then get rid of the tensioner pin on that bolt. Turn the crankshaft two times and make sure the timing marks match. Place the front timing belt cover, engine mount bracket and the right engine mount to engine mount bracket through bolt. Once you've removed the jack from the engine, fit the upper torque strut and the power steering pump assembly. Pick up the car and put in the lower torque strut. Fix the crankshaft damper to your engine using the M12-1.75 x 150 mm bolt, washer, thrust bearing and nut found in Special Tool 6792, tightening the bolt to 142 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Afterward, attaching the plastic drives under the hood to the engines, putting the right splash shield, setting the car on the ground and using the DRB scan tool to reprogram the engine timing by placing it in the passenger compartment, turning the ignition switch on, selecting "miscellaneous" on the screen, clicking on "re-learn cam/crank," and following the on-screen instructions.
