2000 Dodge Ram 3500 Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Exhaust Valves and Intake Valves on 2000 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Before you start, down the cylinder head safely and carefully. Use MD-998772A valve spring compressor with adapter 6716A to squeeze the springs and then remove the locks holding the valve springs, retainer pieces, seals and springs. Remove burrs from the center of the valve stem lock grooves and be sure to record which is which for proper reassembly. Wash each valve and throw away any that are damaged, warped or broken. Apply a guide cleaner to erase the carbon and varnish left in the valve guides. Check the diameter of the valve stem; if it's over 0.051 mm (0.002 inch), you should replace it. After applying lubrication oil on the valve stems, put them into the cylinder head. Should you keep reground valves or seats, you also need to check the valve stem height; if the valve is not the proper size, a new cylinder head shoudl be fitted. New seals should be fitted onto every valve guide, then the valve springs and wire valve retainers are installed. Put the Valve Spring Compressor Tool MD-998772A and adapter 6716A on the valve springs, insert the locks and take the tool off. When valves or seats are ground, put springs in place and measure the height from the bottom of the seat in the cylinder head to the retainer itself. If you have spacers, begin from the top of these when measuring. If the height is over 42.86 mm (1-11/16 inches), place a 1.587 mm (1/16 inch) spacer in the head counterbore so the spring returns to the accepted range of 41.27 to 42.86 mm (1-5/8 to 1-11/16 inch).
