2000 Dodge Ram 3500 Piston Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Piston in an Engine on 2000 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: First, remove the engine from the vehicle, then the cylinder head and the oil pan before you can remove the piston. Ream the ridges at the top of the cylinders using a reliable ridge reamer, being sure that the tops of the pistons are covered while you do this. Figure out the connecting rod and cap related to the cylinder, unscrew the cap and then place the connecting rod bolt guide set on the bolt. The pistons and connecting rods must be taken off by placing the crankshaft to center the connecting rod in the cylinder bore has the crankshaft in its lowest position, with no nicks on the crankshaft journals. Following the removal, slide on the bearing cap on the rod where the bearing was. During installation, the compression ring gaps should not match the rail gaps of the oil rings. Before putting the ring compressor into use, ensure both the oil ring expander ends are touching and the rail gap setting is on point. Dip the piston head and rings in engine oil and slide the piston ring compressor C-385 over the piston. Use the special wrench to ensure the ring positions are not disturbed as you tighten the ring compressor. Make sure each connecting rod bolt has a protector, with the long one on the side with the number. Spin the crankshaft until the connecting rod journal fits in the center of the cylinder bore, with the numbers matching. Put the piston and rod into the cylinder bore, with the rod connecting over the crankshaft journal and use a hammer to press the piston down as the rod goes into place. Be sure the notch or groove on the top of the piston is aimed toward the front and the larger part of the connecting rod bore is fitted against the fillet on the crankshaft journal. Place the rod caps, making sure the numbers on the rods, caps and cylinder bore are the same and tighten the nuts on the cleaned and oiled rod bolts to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) torque. Secure the oil pan, cylinder head and engine into their original positions in the car.
