2000 Dodge Viper Air Bag Control Module Parts and Q&A
Q: How Can the Air Bag Control Module Be Safely Removed and Installed to Prevent Accidental Deployment on 2000 Dodge Viper?
A: Since the impact sensor is in the air bag Control Module, it should never be connected to the system electrically if it is not securely bolted to the vehicle, nor should it be struck or kicked to prevent accidental deployment. No air bag work should be performed before the negative battery cable is disconnected and the system capacitor allowed to drain for at least two minutes, as this is the only required way to safely cut off the air bag system. Initially, cut the negative battery cable, next wait two minutes if the air bag module hasn't been deployed to allow the capacitor to clear and finally pull the air bag Control Module out. After that, take off the center instrument panel bezel, unplug the power window switch wiring and remove the five screws from each knee bolster. To remove the headlamp switch knob, use a paper clip, then uncover the steering column by unscrewing its covers and get rid of the entire bezel. Undo the screws on the radio and then the four screws on the HVAC control head, unplug the electrical and vacuum connectors, but leave the cable to the temperature control in place and removed to the side. Through the radio opening, remove the connector for the air bag Control Module wire harness. Unbolt the three fasteners holding the module to the floor transmission tunnel and pull it out from under the instrument panel radio opening. During installation, take the same steps you used for removal, but don't connect the battery negative cable for now. When putting on your air bag Control Module, make sure the arrow is at the front of the housing, put it on with the three transmission tunnel studs, fasten the nuts firmly to 10.7 Nm (95 in. lbs.-force) and you are done. Finally, link the wire harness connector to the air bag Control Module, making sure it's full seated and the locking tabs are locked.
