2000 Dodge Viper Camshaft Position Sensor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install a Camshaft Position Sensor on 2000 Dodge Viper?
A: The camshaft position sensor stays on the timing chain case/cover near the left-front side of your engine with a thin plastic rib underneath to hold it in the correct position against the upper cam gear (sprocket). During the initial use of the engine, part of this rib may be sheared and so adding a paper spacer can help maintain the proper sensor gap when reusing it. First, disconnect the harness from the sensor, scribe the sensor area to help depth indication, loosen the mounting bolt and use two screwdrivers to carefully lift the sensor out of the cover/case of the timing chain. Make sure the sensor O-ring is in good shape by applying some engine oil just before installing it. Change the sensor depth or move the cam gear so that the part to be checked lines up underneath the sensor's mounting hole. Check the distance between the cam gear and the sensor hole; only install if it is about 1-15/32 inches because 1-5/8 inches is too big. Rock the sensor while installing it till it is at the scribe line and use the paper spacer if it is a used sensor. Afterwards, fasten the mounting bolt to 6 Nm (50 in. lbs.) and link up the harness. For a new sensor, pull the old sensor out, lubricate the O-ring with engine oil and make sure the sensor is put back in place correctly, so you don't twist it by mistake. Once the rib material is installed, it shears when the engine fires up, adjusting and setting the sensor air gap automatically.
