2000 Jeep Cherokee Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Address Issues with a Parking Brake Cable on a 2000 Jeep Cherokee?
A: The equalizer nuts should be loosened until the rear cables become slack after you lift the car off the ground. Unhook the cables from the equalizer and then squeeze the cable retainers shut using a worm drive hose clamp. Remove the cables from the cable bracket and pull out the rear wheel and brake drums following. After that, take off the secondary brake shoe and unhook the cable from the lever attached to the shoe. Close the cable retainer with the hose clamp and draw out the cable from each backing plate. When installing, insert the cables into the backing plates and make sure the cable retainer is in its place. Put the stem of the cable into the lever on the brake shoe and install the brake shoe onto the backing plate. Use the brake gauge to line up the shoes with the drum and finally install both drum and wheel. Secure the cables in the cable bracket with their retainers placed, attach the cable ends to the equalizer and then bolt the equalizer nut. Don't forget to set the parking brakes at the end.
