2000 Jeep Cherokee Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Brake Caliper on 2000 Jeep Cherokee?
A: Beginning with taking off the brake pads and draining the brake fluid from the caliper is the first step to service and repair. Encase the caliper piston in a cushion of one-inch thick shop towels while you take it out. With the fluid inlet port on and pressurized, blast the piston one or two times with low air pressure, then move it away from the bore without the risk of cracking it from sustained pressure. Making sure the pipe turns down is much safer than trying to catch the piston when it exits the bore. Following this, lift the caliper piston dust boot off with a proper pry tool and remove the caliper piston seal using a wood or plastic tool so that you do not damage the caliper bore. Get rid of the bushings and boots found on the caliper mounting bolt. Before assembly, clean and dry the area to protect the caliper seals. Apply clean brake fluid to the caliper piston bore, new piston seal and piston and put silicone grease on both the caliper bushings and the inside of the bushing boots. Fit the bushing boots on the caliper, stuff the bushings into the boots and push the whole piece into place. Apply the new piston seal to the groove in the cover with your hands. Put the new dust boot towards the caliper piston and make it sit on its groove. Pull back and down on the piston with your hand and as you push up, get it past the seal and into the bottom of the caliper bore. Lastly, hold the dust boot in place with Installer Tool C-4842 and Tool Handle C-4171 and make sure you reinstate the caliper bleed screw if you took it out.
