2000 Jeep Cherokee Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on 181 and 186 FBI Axles on 2000 Jeep Cherokee?
A: Before servicing or repairing the steering knuckle with an 181 or 186 FBI Axle, remove the hub bearing, take out the axle shaft and disconnect the tie-rod or drag link from the steering knuckle arm. After removing the cotter pins, also take out the nuts from both upper and lower ball studs. Strike the steering knuckle with a brass hammer to allow it to come loose from the ball studs and then remove it. Use your hands as instructed to remove and replace each of the upper and lower ball studs. To put the knuckle in, first place it over the ball studs, next fit and tighten the other nut to 109 Nm (80 ft. lbs.) and then insert a new cotter pin. Now, put in and fasten the top bolts until the nut is tight at 101 Nm (75 ft. lbs.). Secure the new cotter pin to hold the nut in place. After that, reset the hub bearing and shaft and attach the tie-rod or drag link end at the steering knuckle arm.
