2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service a Steering Knuckle on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Service the steering knuckle by taking out the hub bearing, axle shaft and tie-rod or drag link from the steering knuckle arm. Also, obtaian the pins from each side of the ball studs and unscrew the upper and lower ball stud nuts as well. Hit the assembly with a brass hammer to loosen the steering knuckle from the ball studs before taking it out. During installation, place the steering knuckle over the ball studs and tighten the bottom nut to 109 Nm (80 ft. lbs.), after which you should add a new cotter pin. After that, turn the top retaining nut to a torque of 101 Nm (75 ft. lbs.) and put a second new cotter pin in place. In the end, screw on the hub bearing and axle shaft, then connect the steering knuckle end of the tie-rod or drag link to the linkage. Removing or installing upper and lower ball studs with Tool Kit 6289 is required.
