2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Brake Pad Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain Your Brake Pads on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Service the rear brake pads by first lifting the car, removing the rear wheels and tires and then moving on. Remove the caliper guide pin bolts found on either side and then turn the caliper away by the top while lifting it off the machined abutment. Use wire or cord to safely hang the brake caliper from the rear strut so you don't harm the brake hose. First, open the retaining clip by pushing up on it at the caliper's shoulder, then slide the brake shoe off. Pull the shoes of the inboard brake away from the caliper piston until you can release the retaining clip. Do the same steps in order to fix the other side of the vehicle. Fasten the bracket at one end of the rotor and retraction the caliper piston into the bore to make room for the shoe to rotate freely. Squash the brake shoe into the caliper piston until it fits right up against the pad. Put the brake shoe onto the caliper, making sure the clip is set in the right place. Rub the Mopar Multipurpose Lubricant or an alternative on the adapter caliper slide abutments. Make sure the bottom edge of the caliper goes just behind the caliper's slide and rotate the top into position. Be sure not to twist the caliper guide pin bolts as you install them, then tighten them to a torque of 22 Nm (192 inch lbs.). Put back the tire and wheel unit, so the wheel mounting nuts are tightened to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Work on the other side in the same way, set the wheels on the ground, press the brake pedal a few times and go for a road test to remove any extra material and get the brakes to seat properly.
