2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Rear Brake Pads on 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: All you have to do first for rear brake pad changes or repairs is to lift the car and unbolt or disconnect both the rear tires and their wheel assemblies. Carry out the removal on the left and right wheels and if you need more clearance, pull the caliper piston inside a bit. Unscrew the guide pin bolts and pull the caliper assembly away by pivoting the top away from the rotor and lifting it off the adapter. Attach the caliper to the rear strut with a cord or wire so it doesn't put stress on the brake hose. Open the retaining clip and let the outboard shoe drop, then pressure the piston and remove the inboard shoe when the retaining clip clears the caliper. Clean the braking system using water, a rag and remove any materials made from asbestos correctly. If brake shoes have uneven wear, measure their thickness; replace the front shoes if they are down to 7.95 mm (5/16 inch) and the rear shoes when they are down to 9.0 mm (3/8 inch). If eventual replacement happens, install both the inboard and outboard brake shoes on the calipers in their original places if you have to put them back again. Fully pull out the caliper piston, push the inner shoe fully into the piston, attach the outer shoe to the caliper and spray the adapter caliper abutments with Mopar Multipurpose Lubricant. Slowly place the caliper over the rotor, watching that you don't cross-thread the guide pin bolts and then tighten the bolts to 22 Nm (192 in. lbs.). Install the tire and wheel assembly, use a torque wrench to set the wheel nuts at 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.), lower the car and pump the brake pedal to firm it up. Then, take the car for a drive to make sure the brake shoes properly seat.
