2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Catalytic Converter on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Wait for the exhaust system to cool because the catalytic converter operates at a very high temperature. Prior to replacing anything, find out the reason for failure which might be related to the air, fuel or ignition system. Start by detaching the muffler and the intermediate pipe, then come to the downstream oxygen sensor's electrical connector. Now, unfasten the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold and toss away the flange gasket that falls off. Use a fresh flange gasket when setting up the catalytic converter and fasten it with 28 Nm (250 inch lb.) worth of tightening. Join the middle parts of your system and check everything is lined up and there is enough space. Tighten the holding clamps to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Don't tighten the clamps too much to make sure they don't come loose. Should the downstream oxygen sensor be missing, replace it and secure the electrical connector. Always fit original or comparable parts to anything you are replacing along the exhaust line.
