2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Muffler Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Muffler on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Because the muffler works at high temperatures, especially close to the catalytic converter, always make sure the exhaust system is cool before servicing it. On a hoist, go underneath the vehicle and add penetrating oil to the fastener of the component you are taking out; do not add petroleum-based fluids to the muffler or exhaust pipe isolators; instead, use dish soap and water mixed0 After taking the rear exhaust system ground strap off, loosen the band clamp and remove the support isolators from the muffler before you take the muffler away from the intermediate pipe. Mate the pipes and muffler only after first cleaning the ends and taking out all broken or worn isolators, scraped or old clamps, supports and attached parts. For any exhaust system fix, original equipment parts or the equivalent should be used. Do not tighten the clamps until all the parts have been moved into their proper positions and you have checked all spacing between the parts. Add the muffler to the intermediate pipe and the isolator supports to the underbody and as you proceed frontward in assembly, make sure the components line up well and that clearance with underbody components is maintained, securing them with a 47-Nm (35-ft. lb.) clamp. Be careful not to tighten the clamps too much or they could lose their holding power; if the clamp bottoms out on the center block, it should be taken apart, the bad part removed, the parts aligned and a new one put on. In the end, put on the exhaust system ground strap.
