2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Exhaust Pipe Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain an Exhaust Pipe on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Allow the exhaust system to cool before checking it, because its parts are extremely hot, especially near the catalytic converter. Hoist the vehicle up and spray penetrating oil on the band clamp of the component you are taking out, but do not use petroleum products on muffler or exhaust pipe isolators; instead, use a mix of liquid dish soap and water. Take out the muffler, unscrew the band clamp and take the support isolator off, before separating the intermediate pipe from the catalytic converter pipe. Be sure to clean the ends of the pipes and muffler, discarding any parts that are broken or worn, as well as rusted or badly used clamps, supports and fixtures. If any part of your exhaust system needs to be changed, try to use either factory parts or their substitutes. Guidelines should be aligned and all components properly placed before you lock the clamps tight. Fixed the intermediate pipe, isolator supports and muffler to the underbody, finishing with the muffler being attached. At the front, place each piece so it is lined up and well away from the car's underbody, then clamp them with band clamps set to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Don't tighten the band clamps to the last notch, as pressuring the two halves too much will ruin the clamp and require you to get it replaced. Take off the nut and peel the ends of the old band clamp until you can see the spot weld broken, making sure the new clamp is put on correctly.
