2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Steering Wheel Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Service and Repair a Steering Wheel on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Always make sure the air bag is not lying across a hard surface, face down, as this could lead to its deployment, causing harm to you or others. Workers must cut the battery negative (ground) cable to isolate the front air bag system during any work. Give the capacitor in the front air bag system two minutes to discharge naturally. Adjust the steering wheel to move the tires forward, then turn it diagonally to the right and secure the complete position by using the ignition cylinder lock. Open the hood and then disconnect the negative battery cable. Get rid of the driver air bag module and unbolt the small retaining bolt at the base of the steering wheel. Feeding the wires into the holes as you remove it with a steering wheel puller. Before installing, make sure the steering wheel is still turned right by half a turn, the column is locked and the stalk for the turn signals points downward. Hook the steering wheel at all three points, adjusting it so the flat ends match with the hub and the Clock Spring. Next, pull the air bag, horn lead and speed control leads through the larger side slot. After setting the bolt to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.), attach the air bag module to the bracket. Make sure to only attach the battery's negative wire after the air bag system is studied and tested. Once everything is serviced, check the car and all its systems before you close the hood.
