2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Tie Rod End Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Tie Rod End on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before fixing the outer tie rod, you should raise the car, take off the tire and wheel assembly. Remove the locknut from the tie rod, thread it up the tie and pull the collar off the end of the outer tie rod. Then, with one tool, hold the tie rod firmly in place as you loosen the nut joining the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Disconnect the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle using Remover, Special Tool MB991113 and the tie rod heat shield will come out too. Take out the outer tie rod from the inner tie rod. When installing, put the jam nut onto the inner tie rod threads, fit the collar in place and thread the outer tie rod onto the inner tie rod. Attach the collar to the outer tie rod and put the jam nut on the collar, simply to position it for now. Linear the holes and tangs of the tie rod heat shield with those of the knuckle's steering arm and hook the tie rod heat shield into place. Join the outside tie rod end with the steering knuckle, put the nut onto the connecting stud and, as you hold the stud still, screw it in. Use a crowfoot wrench with a torque wrench to tighten the nut to your desired amount: 55 Nm (forty foot pounds). Set up the following sequence: reinstall the wheel assembly, tighten the nuts by 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.), lower the vehicle on the ground and correct front toe if needed.
